“Let it Rust” or #خليها_تصدي is a social media campaign that began taking the internet by storm in Egypt, towards the end of 2018. According to Al Ahram Weekly, the online protests are taking place against the high prices of cars and consumers have continued to wait for a decrease in automotive prices. This comes following the full elimination of custom tariffs on European cars, within the framework of the free-trade agreement with the EU, that went into effect at the beginning of the year.
Although car prices declined earlier this month, activists say prices are still too high and are urging traders to set fair prices. The campaign is also demanding apologies for unprofessional and immoral violations in regards to the automotive market in Egypt. It demands that regulations are to be put in place on the rights of customers and car dealers, including fixed margins for dealerships, distributors and vendors.
