It’s understandable when the only thing you fear is receiving the “let’s do something tonight” text from your significant other because when dealing with an overwhelming load of deadlines, emails, meetings and social events becomes your way of life; it can be hard to make time for your relationship.
However, you just can’t help but feel guilty every time you cancel plans because it then opens a gateway for another argument about how ‘you’re never free to do anything’ and unfortunately, this can take a toll on your relationship.
In order to make things work for you here are some rules that’ll help with making things a lot easier:
Learn to Prioritize
With your hectic schedule, it’s easy to get caught up in all the work but if you’re constantly finding excuses (like work) not to be with the person then maybe you should reconsider your relationship. Decide to prioritize your time with your significant other and try to be as efficient as possible in the office so that you can spend more time with your person afterwards.
Be Honest and Straightforward
Be honest and straightforward with them from the very beginning and tell them exactly what to expect from you. It is important for your significant other to understand that the traditional logistics of a relationship are not always better, as a matter of fact, they are sometimes unrealistic especially for someone who is extremely busy.
Be Flexible
Being flexible about what your date should look like can solve a lot of unnecessary issues. Dates don’t always have to be extravagant or romantic, you don’t have to wait for the weekend to do something big. You can plan coffee breaks and quick lunches in between just to say hello and check in.
Set Goals
Since you acknowledge that you need to set goals in your careers if you want a promotion or if you know that you will need to work on certain projects and put in that extra time, there is no reason that you should not apply this mindset in your relationship.
Compromise and Collaborate
You will have to compromise certain thing for the sake of your relationship. It shouldn’t feel like a chore to have to leave a project half finished or take a few hours to shut your computer off and put your phone on silent in order to prioritize your relationship.
Don’t Compare
Social media is the number one killer of relationships simply because people can’t help but compare what they have to the picture perfect relationships on social media platforms. But forget about what you see or what you hear, everyone has a different story so start appreciating what you have!
