Maybe it’s time for a career break

From an early age we’re led to do certain things in life. We’re told to go to school and are told to get good grades in high school to be able to go to college. We go to college and are told to get good grades to get a good job. We get a good job and it stops. Of course, your family expect you to get married and start a family. But you always have to work, 5 days a week, 8 hours a day (If not more), for as long as you can breathe on this earth.

Well, how else are you going to support yourself? If not for the job, you will never be able to get anywhere in life. You save some money and spend some. You buy new clothes, new products, eat at different restaurants, and maybe buy gifts. Once you enter working life you will never, willingly get out of it.

Who said you can’t? When you reach your 30’s or 40’s, your life turns to an unbearable routine. You get sucked into work life and can never get out of it. But, after wasting a decade or two doing the same thing, it might be time for you to take a break. Taking a break can be scary. How will you be able to sustain yourself with no pay check next month? Let me answer that for you; you will. You’ve been saving money for too many years. Don’t worry if the job is not going to be here for you when you come back. You can look for a new one. Spend some time searching for a job, a new routine, new people to meet. It will definitely be worth it in the end.

Why should you take a break? Because life is hectic. Because if you continue doing the same thing you’ll probably die while doing it. Take a break and travel. See new places, know more cultures. Go on a mountain hike. Do something you were always afraid of doing. You can learn a new skill, or polish an old one. You can start giving back to society, volunteer in NGOs and use your work experience to help others in need. This will give you new perspective in life. Don’t get cocky with age and think you’ve learned all there is that the universe can give you. There’s still more. But you still have to seek it.

Don’t give in to a stagnant life. Keep moving. Don’t lie on your death bed regretting the things you didn’t do.

Meet Jasmin Adel, 925’s newest intern! You know when you really like a song so you listen to it every day, show it to all your friends and write its lyrics all over your body and then one day, poof, you’re on to the next one? Jasmin describes herself as the physical representation of that. If there is one thing she can do, it’s probably obsessing over things like the fan girl that she’s always been. So, if you see her write a passionate article about something today, she might not want to hear about it, ever again.
