We Asked Call Center Employees about Their Strangest Experiences and Here’s What They Said

So, the other day, my internet bundle went down at 12:00 am for no reason. Like any normal person, I called the customer service fuming and stuttering gunshots out of my mouth. The agent was trying her best to soften my blow and after remarkable self-discipline from her side, she was able to soothe my inflated anger episode. So, the woman put me on hold to figure out what was wrong and before she noticed, I passed out and fell asleep.

Realizing what I had done the next morning was enough reason for me to talk to a couple of call center employees and get to know the weirdest phone calls they’ve ever received. So I did just that.

El Sawy, 28 years old: “At 11:00 pm, I received a call from a girl who said that she was lost in the desert whilst hiking and that her credit finished. She called me asking for help, either by recovering her package or connecting her to someone who could help her.”

Sherif, 29 years old: “It could take forever to list the weird calls I’ve gotten, however, there is this one, that distinctly comes to mind. Back when I was working for a Canadian Carrier, we had this regular caller, who would call relentlessly around 5-6 times per hour just for the sole purpose of insulting anyone who wasn’t of Canadian nationality. He would ask for our names and if it’s less David/Michael and more Ahmed/Nadia, then you were in for the A-Z of all the profanities in the dictionary for absolutely no reason, no matter what you say.”

Nagy, 22 years old: “I got a furious call from a drunk guy once who called because his internet package was fully-consumed whilst fighting with his girlfriend. The next minute, he was venting and asking me for advice on how to make up with her.”

Zaki, 22 years old: “I once got a call from an old lady at 2:00 am. Going through the call, I realized that she didn’t actually have anything to complain about. My gut feeling was on point. She started asking me about my life, where I graduated from and a lot of other personal stuff that made extremely uncomfortable and cold. Trying to get past the embarrassment of rejection, she asked about her mobile and then hung up.”

Loui, 23 years old: “When I was working for Answer365 in Toronto, a woman accidentally reached us instead of calling Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). She then explained how she was looking for a meeting close to her place, asking for my help. She went on and explained that her husband went to one of those meetings and hooked up with some of the women there. She wanted to go without him knowing and was literally asking me if she should do it or not.”
