Tinder: A Strange Place to Land Jobs

The real question here is, are you swiping right on a date or an unmissable career move? Is Tinder becoming a low-key LinkedIn in Egypt? Dating apps, like Tinder, thrive off of people looking for love. But are some users really just hoping that their dates will end not with a second one, but with job offers or business propositions? Below are several stories of people who have actually landed a job opportunity or a business proposal through Tinder in Egypt.

“I met a guy on Tinder and he was really tall and handsome. On our second date, the relationship took the weirdest turn, we were talking about work and I was telling him that I am looking for a job in PR. The relationship didn’t work out but something else did. He was the vice president at a company that organizes entrepreneurship programs. He asked me to send him my resume and I honestly thought he was just being polite. Right after our date he texted me reminding me to send in my resume, so I did. The next day he called me and asked me to come in for an interview. The day of the interview he was very professional, I honestly forgot that I knew him off Tinder. Fast forward a few days later, he hired me and I worked there for 6 months and he was my boss. I also met a potential client on Tinder, we did not end up working with him but we did pitch to him.”

“I was on Tinder as a joke with a friend of mine and it was an anonymous account. I even had a black picture and a different name. So, I matched with this guy and we started speaking about random topics. Out of nowhere, he told me he liked the way I write and gave me a few compliments on my flawless grammar. Next thing you know, he offered me a job as a writer at his magazine, and I’ve been working there for the past 2 years. We stopped dating and he’s still my boss. Yes it gets awkward sometimes, but at least I’m happy with what I do.”

Ahmed Medhat

“Funniest story of my life, literally! I was cat-fished on Tinder, typical American movie. I went to meet the girl and she wasn’t the person in the picture, yet surprisingly, I did not leave. I did not want to be shallow and I actually liked her personality. It was a bit awkward at first, so I broke the ice by speaking about work, and how I hated my current job. We stopped speaking after our first date because I honestly did not feel comfortable being with someone who cat-fished me. About a month later, she called me and told me that they were looking for marketing employees where she worked, I applied, got the job, and the girl and I are currently co-workers and really good friends.”

“I accidentally matched with an Armenian couple visiting Egypt, I swiped right by mistake. The first thing they sent me was ‘Hey, we are looking for someone to show us around Cairo.’ Honestly, I had just gotten out of a serious relationship, and I was looking for a rebound or a distraction. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone, so I met them and I showed them around for three consecutive days. They invited me to attend their wedding in Armenia taking place in 3 months. I went to the wedding during which I met one of the bride’s cousins and he offered me a job in one of his hotels in Armenia. I’m moving there this June.”
