In an exclusive event at the 7th edition of El Gouna Film Festival (GFF), the United Nations World Food Programme(WFP) in Egypt, in partnership with GFF and Zest, announced Mahmoud Khaled El Assi as the winner of the “3eish” short film competition. This unique competition called on filmmakers across Egypt and the Arab world to submit short film concepts that shed light on food security through cinema.
The competition encouraged filmmakers to draw inspiration from key programmes that WFP has been implementing in partnership with the Egyptian government. These programmesinclude four critical areas: women and youth empowerment, rural development, school feeding, and nutrition for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The judging panel, made up of some of the most respected figures in the film industry— Egyptian producer and director Marianne Khoury, acclaimed scriptwriter Tamer Habib, producer Muhammad Taymour, the first Egyptian producer to win the prestigious Palme d’Or at Festival De Cannes — highlighted during the event the importance of bringing essential issues like food security to the screen.
Out of many entries, Mahmoud Khaled El Assi stood out for his compelling concept, which features a heartfelt portrayal of resilience and family bonds set against the iconic Giza Pyramids during the health deterioration of the family’s camel, the only source of income for the family. Through siblings Sayed and Samar’s journey, it explores themes of compassion, cultural expectations, economical struggles and the courage to defy societal pressures. As part of his award, El Assi will have their film “Khufu” produced and premiered at the 8th edition of GFF next year.
Jean-Pierre de Margerie, WFP Egypt Representative and Country Director, who attended the event, emphasized the importance of using storytelling to address critical issues, such as food security: “Food security is at the heart of many challenges we face today, and film is a powerful tool to raise awareness. Through the ‘3eish’ competition, we aim to bridge the public with these critical topics, inspiring change and amplifying the voices of those who are most affected by food insecurity. We are delighted to see filmmakers taking part in this conversation and helping highlighting these issues in such a creative way.”
Marianne Khoury, Artistic Director of El Gouna Film Festival said “The 3eish Short Film Competition highlights the challenges of food security through the lens of cinema, inviting creatives to use their art for real impact. This partnership with WFP and Zest emphasizes cinema’s power to drive change and raise awareness on issues that affect countless lives. We hope to see creatives inspire new perspectives and meaningful conversations, driving essential solutions for basic food needs and support services.”
The event also showcased screenings on the role food has played in Egyptian cinema throughout the years. Attendees included the Chairman of Orascom Development Holding Samih Sawiris and the Executive Director and Co-founder of Gouna Film Festival, Amr Mansi, along with celebrities, influential figures, and senior officials.
