University is great and all but lets face it, it doesn’t always fulfill our needs nor does it provide you with many options. Sometimes you need a little something extra to add on to your resume. People are always looking for new skills to learn, its part of standing out amongst a crowd of ambitious people who are always eager to learn new things. Piling on the extra credit is always a bonus, but its better to become someone who is multi-talented and has several skills up their sleeves. You become an asset that people will be fighting over.
There are countless centers that offer courses including fashion design, writing, drawing, architecture, and many more. They have become a sneaky little way to tweak university systems around the world. Technically, once you’ve completed these courses, you receive a diploma that deems you to be a professional. So once you have completed the course you can slam that onto your resume and you’ve just given yourself an extra skill in no time. Don’t get me wrong, it does take a lot of hard work and more importantly dedication to be able to thoroughly complete the courses, so don’t underestimate them. But also, they are a great way to intellectually pass the time whether you’re in between jobs, or maybe even transitioning from school to university, or university to work life.
As a graphic design student, I’ve always wanted to explore more than the limits of university life. I took up different classes to give myself an edge and to broaden my skill sets. I took drawing (free hand and 3D), photography, and painting courses to challenge more of my creativity. Most people believe these are skills that you’re born with. I’m here to tell you, that statement is absolutely false. Everything comes down to technique and skill which can always be taught and then enhanced with a lot of practice and stimulation of your creativity. I also took fashion design and styling courses as well as interior design courses. I have been able to use them within my graphic design field, and I’ve also used them to gain experience in different fields of work that have introduced me to many more skills I didn’t even know I had until I put them to the test.
Taking courses will teach you a lot about yourself, understanding the things you like from the things you don’t like. You may possibly realize you have a natural talent for a certain skill, but you don’t necessarily enjoy it. You may also find a new hobby that you absolutely love, but have a lack of technique for it. Out yourself out there, meet new people, find new talents, and get creative. Because creativity is SO in right now.
