Egypt Joins Earth Hour by Switching Off Landmark Lights

Egypt is one of 187 countries to participate in Earth Hour this year. Switching off lights around the world contributes to the international awareness of energy consumption. The plan was to switch off lights from 8:30 to 9:30 pm on March 30th.

Egypt turned off the lights for 60 minutes, starting off from the New Administrative Capital. The Sphinx, Pyramids, Salah el Din Citadel, Qaitbay Citadel, Cairo Tower, Alexandria’s Bibliotheca and some temples in Luxor and Aswan contributed to the awareness campaign.

According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Earth Hour will save about 1000 tons of carbon dioxide gas and 2000 megawatts. The idea to include the New Administrative Capital was to promote the concept of the city being built on sound environmental standards and principles. This marks Egypt’s 10th year of joining in on Earth Hour.
