A family business is a blessing, a free pass to a brighter future, but at times it can also feel like a burden. Does following my parent’s footsteps mean I get to give up on my dreams? I for example, always had the dream of becoming a writer. My father, however, has dedicated his entire life to his private business. As the main distributor in Hurghada of Ideal Standard, the renowned multinational bathroom and plumbing fixture company, I was blessed with a stellar education and great health.
This business can never go to waste, someone has to take care of it, especially with my father planning to retire soon and my brother fully immersing himself in the business. That pressure alone has thrusted itself onto my chest, like an unwelcomed hug, and has forced me to become part of this family picture. After graduation, I started to learn how Ideal Standard operates; every single detail. I got to see it firsthand through his eyes. I spent months doing something I absolutely hate: sitting at a desk with people with a completely different mindset and managing finances for eight hours a day, six days a week. It started affecting every aspect of my life and demotivating me in the process.
Sometimes in life, we get put in a situation where we have to swallow our tongues for the ones we love. But does that mean that you should give up on your own dreams? Absolutely not! Be grateful, yes, but don’t let anyone stop you from doing what makes you confident and happy.
I found a way to do both and it worked for me. I did what I desired and also kept the family business running by becoming a part-time writer. Being a part-time employee helps solve the unavoidable circumstances of having a family business to take care of. Part-time jobs give such individuals the opportunity to work as per their own convenience. There is always a way if you try. I am not in any way saying that my path is the right path for everyone, but you should always follow your passion and be prepared to work hard for it. The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams, so make sure you do that!
