How Humor Equates to Money in Egyptian Advertising

Egyptian culture is filled with color and vivid personalities. People are generally outspoken and friendly with one another, which is why a major aspect of our culture is the way people incorporate humor into everything.

We use it in normal day-to-day conversations, online social networking sites, for political reasons and now, for business purposes.

In recent years advertising companies all throughout Egypt have used it to their advantage and have succeeded in doing so.

This managerial wave of thought clearly hits the hardest during Ramadan, where ad agencies bombard Egyptian television with ads that are based on humor and wit. These ads have basically set the bar for Egyptian advertising and in doing so; has pleased audiences and has in return caused high revenues.

The significant presence of humor has altered the way ad agencies deal with advertising within Egypt and possibly the Arab world. These ads are encouraging other agencies to manage newer, catchier and funnier ads. As a whole, Egyptians have a witty sense of humor and are always on the look for the newest trending joke. With these advertisements, we can see how these agencies are trying to reach out and connect with the masses through humor. A sense of humor creates a connection between the product and the viewer. This essential bond is what gives the viewer a feeling of trust.

As most Arabs know, an advertisement in the Arab World used to constitute of a simple and mundane equation: a catchy song, some attractive people and bright digital images.

A recent revolution, however, in this part of the world’s advertising, primarily lead by creative Egyptian talent, has sprung the Arab world into a humorous and sophisticated direction of advertising. According to “The National,” advertising managers working in the region stated:  “Egyptian advertising, today, is an example of how successful advertising should be, because they have succeeded in taking their own culture, habits and their own humor and sensitivity and pushed them to an international level of insight and execution.”

Lets keep up the great work, creative copyrighting and sense of humor!
