How I Found Out I Might Be Gifted In Writing

All my life, I’ve been around people who were interested in writing. It didn’t matter what they wrote; diaries, blogs, articles, food reviews. Writing didn’t seem like much of a talent to me but more of a hobby. I wasn’t really a fan of writing. It wasn’t a thing I enjoyed doing as a teenage girl. I would rather listen to music, watch movies or play video games. The first time I ever wrote something I wrote a dream. There was this thing on Facebook called Notes (I don’t know if they still exist). The first thing I shared there was a very absurd dream. I always had strange dreams that felt out of a sci-fi movie. I never really gave them much attention until, one day, I wrote about one. And, surprisingly enough, people liked it.

From there on, I just kept going. At first I was only sharing things on Facebook. Writing short stories that involved celebrities I knew my friends liked. My friends were my fan base. They supported me ever since I wrote silly dreams and they still support me until now. None of them were people I knew from real life, they were all internet friends. After that, I started a blog and wrote there. I wrote more short stories and poems. I entered competitions set by popular magazines. I didn’t really win anything but I was bold enough to enter the competitions. Suddenly I found myself graduating school and the only thing I knew how to do was write. At first I was scared to enter a very literal college and push myself to hate the thing I love the most. But, the more I used writing in college, the more I loved going there and doing all the projects. I included writing in everything I was forced to do so I could enjoy it a bit more.

Looking back, when I was just 12 or 13 years old, I wouldn’t have imagined there was so much to do with just writing. To me, writing was sort of in my blood. I would write anyway, even if there was no one there to read it. I wasn’t the type to write diaries. I tried to for so long but could never commit. So, instead, I wrote stories. All the things I wanted to have in my life, I gave to the characters in my stories. I discovered more about myself through writing stories about other people. Writing helped me build my personality. It helped me become who I am today even though it started off as a silly thing that didn’t seem to require much skill.

That’s how things start actually. Sometimes you think you’re not the best at something but when you actually start and show people, you find out you’re actually good at it. Don’t keep yourself trapped in something because that’s what your parents wanted or that’s what you were told to do when you were six years old. All you have to do is start. No matter how old you are or how strange the thing is. You’ll never know until you try.

Meet Jasmin Adel, 925’s newest intern! You know when you really like a song so you listen to it every day, show it to all your friends and write its lyrics all over your body and then one day, poof, you’re on to the next one? Jasmin describes herself as the physical representation of that. If there is one thing she can do, it’s probably obsessing over things like the fan girl that she’s always been. So, if you see her write a passionate article about something today, she might not want to hear about it, ever again.
